Diabetics at Village Inn

Village Inn is a tough place for diabetics, and you must be extra cautious while ordering food at the Village Inn, especially if you're a diabetic. The food items low in sodium are high in sugar or cholesterol at Village Inn which makes it difficult for diabetics to choose the right food at the diner.

Foods to Avoid at Village Inn for Diabetics

Village Inn offers very few items edible for diabetics without any threat. You can avoid sandwiches and burgers at Village Inn and try the light breakfast items on the menu. You must also skip the shakes as well as other juices from the beverage menu. Almost all the dinner items on the menu are high in sodium except Grilled Tilapia and 6 oz. Top Sirloin & Toast. Avoid Soup bowls and opt for cups instead at Village Inn.

The food is great here. Very delicious fish tacos. I don't know what happened when they built this place though, cause it's not very....ear friendly. The sound in there echo's so bad it hurts your ears. Staff was alright the last time I was there, kept shouting WHAT?! At me because it was so loud. Super good food though. Hipstery.

First: there was no soap in the men's restroom. Think about that. The food was actually ok for the price, but everything else was awkward or just unpleasant. The person ringing us up tried over and over to complete the purchase even as we were trying to order drinks (there are four of us - we are probably ordering four drinks). After each and every drink request it was "ok, your total is..." Irritating. Also, some of our food required extra time to prepare, but nothing was explained - do we wait at the register? Do we go sit and it will be brought out to us? Do they call out a number or name or something? Nope - they just ring us up and walk away... And the music. All heavy metal and way too loud for any kind of conversation. Completely unnecessary and frankly rude to the customers. Overall, I get the impression that the staff are more concerned with each other than their customers. I will most likely not return.

The experiment is over and Chipotle is better. I've tried this place a couple time and the food is really not that great. I've tried the carnitas and steak on nachos. The meat seems to be very bland compared to Chipotle. I also had a bad experience on my last visit. I ordered nachos to go but I guess the music was up so loud they didn't hear me. Anyway, when I got to the register I told the guy that it was supposed to be to go. Instead of transferring my food to a larger container, the genius pulls out a flat plastic lid and crushes the nachos, I just paid for, down into a mush then puts a rubber band around it. I should have demanded my money back but I was in shock. How would he feel if I turned his $9.00 nachos into a soggy pile of mush? Anyway, after I few choice words, I left with the slop. Never again!

Illegal Petes in the DTC is probably the best option for burritos in the area. I work a couple of blocks away and haven't found anything better. For breakfast burritos it can run about $10, which is a bit pricey. The green chili is good and they also have a vegetarian option.

So impressed with the breakfast burritos, and the bloody Mary may be the best I've ever had. The rest of the menu looks amazing, will definitely have to come back here!

Whoa, they have breakfast?? Stopped in here on a Sunday morning when there was a huge wait for Delectable Egg and Illegal Pete's didn't disappoint! Not only is their breakfast delicious but super cheap! I ended up getting a breakfast bowl with black beans, cheese and all the spicy fixings. My only complaint is that the line moves pretty slow, I've planned on going here a few times for lunch but the line was out the door.

I love illegal Pete's nachos everything is pretty good here beats Chipotle by a landslide very low key. they have a bar and a sit down casual restaurant open late hours

Wow, Fish Tacos are great. Wish the hot salsa was a little hotter, but that is not an issue with all the hot bottle salsas as add ins. Really tasty!

I normally go here for lunch or dinner. Today was my first time for breakfast. I was there at 10:30 and ordered a breakfast burrito. They started with MAYBE 1 1/2 barely warm scrambled eggs on a huge tortilla I asked for no meat or potatoes but black beans instead. And they charged me extra... WTF ?? When I asked the girl behind the counter about the upcharge for beans when I didn't get meat or potatoes. She snarled something about beans are always extra. HUH ? My fault for not walking out then. Less than generous amount of wilted peppers and onions that were sauteed probably an hour earlier ... extra. Sour cream...extra. Surprisingly I didn't get uncharged for salsa They did however fatten the burrito up with lettuce....no extra charge I walked out with a pathetic veggie bfast burrito that was mostly tortilla and lettuce for almost $9.00 BOOOO !! Extremely disappointed. I wont be going back.

Good but not bad. When I first got to Denver I thought it was great but then I fell like the quality went down... Def a place to try and it's surely better than chipotle lol

Loved it! The guy at the counter was super friendly and helpful with the menu. It was my first time here with my wife and two small kids- we ordered a fish taco (very fresh), a pork carnitas taco (pork was succulent), and a simple chicken taco (chicken was seasoned and really good). Chips and queso was good too. We both had a beer as well and the bartender was very friendly when we ordered it. We will definitely come back w/o the kids (3pm-8pm happy hour!). The place was pretty loud though because it was busy, which is ok when you have loud kids :)

We ordered eight of their legendary breakfast burritos online; however, when we arrived we were informed that there was a problem with their system and that they never got the order. The employee assisting me was profusely apologetic and accommodating. She gave us five free coffees and came and touched base with us multiple times while we waited for our burritos to be made. The burritos were gigantic and delicious. They are definitely a substantial meal. Mine had peppers, onions, vegetarian green chili, and chorizo. Most of the ingredients were mixed up within the tortilla but I occasionally happened upon a pocket of just one component (such as a lovely bite of cheese). The atmosphere at Illegal Pete's was casual, cool, and industrial/loft. It was spacious and laid with regular tables, tall tables, a bar (with alcohol), a counter for ordering, and two stations with condiments and napkins. It is part of a strip mall and has ample parking.

While I'm a Chipotle lover through and through, I did like Illegal Pete's. They have a much more extensive menu than Chipotle does, which can be good if you're always looking to try new things. Or, if you're a creature of habit like me, you'll probably just get the same thing and the larger menu won't matter to you. I did like that they had a bar and could serve more than just a few bottles beers and margaritas. Kudos to Pete's for having that on Chipotle. Food wise - the hubs and I were both happy with our lunches. We went a little later (1:00 pm) and they'd run out of chicken, but we were able to find something else that was suitable (beef and fish tacos). Mental note - come back for breakfast! It looked like a tasty menu.

This place is one of those places that knows exactly what they want to deliver, and they do it right on the bullseye. It's unique. They bring a very relaxed regular hang out sports bar feel, with chipotle-like food. Atmosphere was fun and made it a great experience for chewing down. Even though compared to chipotle, it was way better with fresher and vibrant flavors. I don't know who the guy was that filled my tacos, but he wasn't scared at all to put a big ol slab of guac on my tacos. Who else does that? I love avocado and every place I'm used too doesn't give much or charges extra, so this was a huge plus. My tortillas were on the colder side, not too big of a deal though. Great place will definently be back.

Breakfast burrito bowl: deliciously spicy, fresh and well made to order. I chose the chorizo and it was quite tasty and seemed less greasy than other chorizos I've had elsewhere (qdoba, I'm looking at you). What really makes Pete's the best is the staff. They are super relaxed, friendly and seem to love their jobs. That just makes we want to eat their more. Oh, and their Screech tip jar is hilarious.

Great breakfast burritos! Their lunchtime menu is large for a burrito place and the simple task of stirring the fixings before wrapping the burrito goes a long way toward improving the entire experience. NEW REVIEW: Breakfast burritos are still good, but the staff seems to be annoyed with me showing up in the mornings. I'm thinking that they're just mad that they have to be up but I just come for the burritos and green chili not the attitude.

Laid back staff that go the extra mile to make you feel appreciated. This spot has figured out good food and a fun and natural atmosphere. And they play some good tunes too! Did I mention they have cheap drinks.

Sad cinco de mayo at DTC location. Love the food usually.. We ordered fish tacos. The tortillas were hard. The fish was over fried. We didn't get lime. I was told to go to the bar to get lime. The bartender was busy. I had to wait while, no one was in the food line. I had these in boulder yesterday at the pearl location. 100% better food and service. Too bad I live in DTC.. I won't be back to this location.

Love it! Just recently I was finally introduced to IP after only ever driving by it all of the time. I get the potato burrito. One thing that makes IPs stand out is that after building your burrito, they mix all of the ingredients so you get a little bit of everything in each bite! Fast, friendly service! Btw, they are always busy so I suggest using their awesome mobile app! It's ready In 15 minutes and you can surpass the line!

I have visited most of the Illegal Pete locations, and I have to say that at first I was not a fan. It was sooo long ago that I don't even remember what I had that I didn't like...it was just that I didn't like something. Well...someone took me back....kicking and screaming to a degree...and I had their nachos and fell in love. Since the fateful return, everything that I have had has been wonderful and now I am an Illegal Pete's fan!

I sometimes wonder how certain companies stay in business. The premise is giving low quality food and consciously cut on consumer's value proposition. My fish tacos consisted on 3 lonely narrow deep fried fish sticks coated with thick batter. That "creation" was covered with chopped dry white cabbage. The salsa was nothing but chopped tomatoes. I wish that more customers would realize that they deserve better food for their money so that Illegal pete's will either improve, or go out of business!

I freaking LOVE this place. Please come to KC where I'm forced to get a sub-par meal at Chipotle. Their ingredients are fresh and you can tell. The nachos are amazing. WAY better than what I make at home. And that's pretty much all I make at home so I have a lot of experience. I love their queso and their chicken. At Chipotle, I feel like it's a 50/50 shot if their meat is going to be super fatty. I tend to fall into the JGF (just got f&$!) category 99% of the time. This never happens at Illegal Pete's. Plus, they have a superb happy hour with $4 margs....and they're strong. I drove a half mile with no lights on after dark before I realized. I understand that it's not smart but I'm just saying their drinks are good. Lighten up (I only had one).

3 fish tacos - my usual order. It is deep fried and comes with good salsas. Squeeze some lime onto it and enjoy the tacos. This time I ordered sopapillas, but they didn't have it so they were kind enough to offer me an ice tea and a cookie instead! I will try the happy hour here one of these days.

Similar to Chipotle or Qdoba as far as the process goes to order your food. Prices are great, and food is great. They also serve breakfast, really good options. If your there for breakfast definetly get the "crispin mimosa" really delicious. The setting is kind of industrial but reminds me of a bar by a beach. They have a full bar and great staff most of the people working here have been there for years. Pete's is one of my go to places for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Delicious! Went in a couple weeks ago and everyone was so nice. Got a burrito and sat at the bar. I don't think there was a bartender scheduled that early 11:30 ish. The sweetest girl saw me and immediately asked if I needed anything. She looked like she was cooking so I was so appreciative she switched gears and got me a beer. Wished I remembered her name, wanted to say thanks!

3 stars only because the menu looked good. The ugly bartender that desperately needs to pick ONE of the many faded crayola colors in her hair was rude and acted like I was interrupting her day coming in. It's been my experience that you put a pretty, welcoming face in front of guests who come into your establishment. We all have bad days, in customer service, you leave it at the door. I walked out. I refer many of my clients to local places. This will not be one.

Let me start off this review by noting that if you love chipotle, you can ignore my review. I mean the restaurant is fine and all. . .but if I want Mexican I eat Mexican.. . This place (Illegal Pete's) is NOT Mexican It is kind of like a Chipotle type place except they offer a few taco options. Now granted, maybe thats what Chipotle does these days. . .but last time. So mostly burritos, 6 or 7 taco options, and a full bar. So Chipoltle on steroids maybe? For their taco options they have a note (mix and match 2 for price of 3). WTF. Seriously people? At Yolando's (much better and just south by 2 miles or so) you have like 20 options and a pick-3 is standard. Okay so I got 3 beef and with a co-worker got the fish taco (and we traded one) Then they topped it with stuff like salad, like out of the box salad greens and olives. No cilantro that I could see. . .I don't expect a lot on my tacos but I didn't expect olives and salads. You end it with no Orchata. . . We went with co-workers and I may be back due to them. . but I will note for the team that I would prefer to go to Yolando's taco on Arapaho EVERY time Note: The guys working there seemed nice. . .the place was very busy. 2/5 - I've experienced better (but note, I would give Chipotle a 2/5 so take it with a grain of salt)

Very relaxing vibe at this place and I cannot say how good the people are that work here. Just wish a few more taco options were available here, but there is plenty to work with. Pricing is right, and this is a great place to go with a group of friends! Chicken burritos here are my favorite...

  • Victor B.

Dined at this location after trying the fairly new South Broadway location and I have to say it seems like their menu offers slightly lower prices. That was one of my primary gripes in regards to the new location was their menu prices based on the food and my experience with other Pete's locations. If you're looking for a decent burrito with good flavor in a quick amount of time, you can't go wrong here. I am also a fan of the offering of wheat flour tortillas :-)

Slow staff but they are always very nice!! And their food is so addicting. Amazing queso. If you haven't tried it, order their secret ranch sauce! It goes on anything!

I love Denver. I'm so glad I moved here and want to live here the rest of my life. But there are a few things I miss from my days in Texas, and one of those things is breakfast tacos. Like a needle in a haystack, it's been a tough search. But thankfully Illegal Pete's has me covered. Now those of you who have never experienced a breakfast taco are probably thinking: "We've got breakfast burritos. What's the fuss?" Well, here's the thing. You often have to be starving to comfortably finish many breakfast burritos in this town. Don't get me wrong, I love a great breakfast burrito. But the beauty of breakfast tacos (when made and sold properly) is that you can buy according to your hunger...or severity of hangover...and they travel nicely. Need a snack? Uno breakfast taco por favor. Regular breakfast? 2-3 will do ya. Starving? Buy as many as the eyes think necessary. Bought too many? They're easily warmed up in the microwave. All of this makes them a nice item to buy in bulk to-go for others as well. I've found breakfast tacos in a couple places along the Front Range, but Illegal Pete's does it right by selling them individually and uses the right ingredients. They come standard with eggs, homefries, and cheese, but you can add bacon or chorizo and other standard options. I prefer the bacon and like to add some of their green sauce to top it off. I suggest asking to have them wrapped individually, and for the sauce in a container - keeps everything from get'n soggy. Although not the top breakfast tacos in the world, they certainly pass the test. And the one time I've had their regular burrito, it was quite tasty as well. Illegal Pete's is quickly becoming my fast taco/burrito establishment of choice.

  • Travis O.

Love this place and it's across the street. The food is good and fast. Sometimes the food can be little cold (chicken) at night because I think they don't have the traffic that they do during the day. Fun place to have a beer and they have a decent happy hour.

  • Phil H.

It feels a bit more rustic and authentic than a qdoba or chipotle. Sort of like if your buddy opened up a burrito place. The food takes a little longer, but I think is worth the wait. They have lots of options, and they all sound delicious. They have booze, too, which is a nice plus, because I typically like my mexican with a cerveza. Fun atmosphere, great food, good prices... you have earned your 4 stars, illegal pete's. Stay awesome.

  • Tyler S.

ARRRRRGH!!!! I have finally made it to Illegal Pete's for breakfast and can say it is pretty darn tasty! You know those days when you wake up and really don't feel like making anything for breakfast or going to the store to make something because you are out of eggs or something?!? Well let me tell you something - this place can hook you up with some tasty food to start your day off right! I have been enjoying the bacon breakfast quesadilla, which pairs really nicely with the pork green chili it comes with. Oh! They do have coffee and juice and stuff, but they also carry BING ENERGY DRINKS!!!!! I don't know about you, but I know where I'm headed for breakfast in the morning!

The people that work for this illegal petes are very friendly and seem happy to serve you! It was really refreshing to have nice/happy people making my food. I got a burrito bowl and it was delicious and fresh! They serve generous portions for the price you pay!

  • Brittany B.

So call me crazy but I like this location WAY better than the one I can walk to. The line moves seamlessly, the green chili burrito bowl was wonderful, and am I crazy or is this place cheaper than the other location? In any case, the overall experience was much better than my last Illegal visit. And the burrito bowl with a wheat tortilla on the side is a great way to get the burrito experience without all the carbs (the bowl wasn't mixed so I was able to avoid half the rice & only ended up eating about half the tortilla). Admittedly, I was hesitant to try the wheat tortilla, but it is delicious!

My husband and I ordered online for dinner tonight and we both agree that even though this is a Illegal Pete's, it's more of the upscale version in the heart of the DTC. We will definitely be back here. I ordered the steak burrito smothered in pork green chili and I have officially found my new favorite from them. My husband ordered the chicken burrito. One thing about this place is I wish their XXXHot was just that. I got that and the corn salsa including jalapenos and didn't feel hardly any burn. A disappointment, but eh, something I can live with. The green chili was awesome and glad I took the chance to order it. It's not that close to us, but we will make the drive back.

Happy Hour here rocks. Definitely made my Friday night fun. The bartender was awesome, the beers were nice and cold and I'm a big fan of the queso here. Nachos + beer made for a great night. We'll definitely be back, I love that we're able to walk here and consume a lot of alcohol and then walk home. Breakfast is next up!

Let's keep this simple. BIG ASS BURRITOS!!!! Its a trendy Chipolte or Qdoba, and the best thing about it, is they mix all your ingredients up and you don't have to ask them to do it. I love the culture of the staff, they are always upbeat and willing to help out. This place is great for lunch or dinner, but you better come with your game face if you order a burrito, cause they are BIG!

I'm a regular at this location because of the staff. So friendly, take the time to talk with everyone and remember their regulars. I recommend the margaritas during happy hour, steak burrito and the aueao is a must!

This place hits the spot at very reasonable prices. The nachos are great and I swear their primavera veggies have some illegal drug in it. They are so good and addictive. Just too much to handle.

To be honest, I haven't tried a lot of their stuff because I love their nachos! My favorite place to go when I want nachos quick~

I like to lose the carbs and wheat so I went for the bowl. Great tasting ingredients and I like that they threw in a bag of tortilla chips so I didn't have to go completely carbless. Plus they make it fun to scoop. I don't know that it is better or worse than Chipotle, but I liked it and will be back.

Illegal Pete's always has fast, friendly service and the food is always fresh and reasonably priced! I tried their queso for the first time last week and it's amaaaaazing!

I've been a few times for take out at lunch and its 20 minutes but I found some items on the menu that I crave...Chicken salad with grilled veggies...Great with green salsa and chopped tomatoes salsa. I have them add the two bell pepper add ons. Its super crunchy and healthy...The tacos are decent. 2 tacos for under $5. They pre mix the burrito ingredients so every bite is yummy. But parking is a pain if you can even find a place...go before 12 or after 1:15. They have a bar with lots of fun drinks and specials...but haven't been there for that.

We placed a 12 item to go order for a business lunch - they did not give us rice, bean, salsa, sour cream - none, zip, zilch. Manager offered to provide items after a phone call, but no time to go again to help them fix their mistake. Beware and check every togo box before you leave - because clearly they do not!

Beef and potato burrito, so so good. I know this sounds weird, but I'll order a burrito with chips and queso and use the chips to spoon the queso onto each bite of my burrito. Admittedly, this place makes me eat like a savage.

I used to go to this place all the time for lunch in highschool. Just recently I started going again and I forgot how delicious there burritos are! I would highly recommend getting a chicken queso burrito on a wheat tortilla. I think this place is way better then chipotle and Qdoba, the atmosphere and burritos are just better. When I lived in boulder I would occasionally get there breakfast burritos and those things were amazing and cheap. If you are sick of the the ordinary burrito joint then I would highly recommend trying out Illegal Pete's!

  • Pat O.

Overrated. We tried to love you, Pete, but at noon on a Tuesday, you were out of fish, you ran out of guacamole and offered us alternatives, and your queso was eerily similar to microwaved Velveeta. Business is booming, but the results do not equal all the rage.

We escaped to this Illegal Pete's on Saturday while killing time for a big kitchen purchase to be pulled at IKEA. This location was bright, colorful, modern, light-filled and uncrowded. The burrito was every bit as delicious as the one I recently had downtown, hand-mixed and huge with big hunks of chicken and well-seasoned beans. And of course lots of fresh cilantro. But what made this trip even better were my delicious margarita and the chips and queso Curt and I shared. The chips were covered with big flakes of salt, exactly how I like them. And the $4.75 marg had the perfect salted rim with plenty of lime wedges inside. I'm rarely in this neck of the woods, but my visit proved that an Illegal Pete's anywhere will totally fit the bill for a quick, cheap Mexican craving. These employees were friendly and made me want to return.

IP's is one of my lunch favorites...at least, before we started sticking to a budget! I still work it in every once in a while with the occasional coupon from the DTC lunch hour book. (I know - I'm cheap!) The food is tasty and the staff is pretty cool, aside from the one time that they questioned me about putting black beans on my quesadilla. If I'm paying for it, just go with it! I'm a big fan of their salsa verde too - it's delicious on everything. The secret at this DTC location is to beat the high school lunch crowd - either go before 11:30, or you better wait til around 1pm. One of these days, I'll remember to head over for some happy hour drafts!

I've been coming here for years, and I have honestly never had a bad meal! This is one of my favorite places to eat in Colorado. The burritos are great, taste fresh, and have many different things on their menu. Try everything, you will like it all!

Great Beer Batter Burritos! First visit here, friendly service. Tried the beer battered fish burrito with cabbage and pico on the recommendation of the counter girl. Unfortunately, as I troweled my way through the otherwise hefty tortilla, I kept calling, "Here, fishy fishy!" fully expecting to get a bite of a lunker, but only came away with a mouthful of a whole lot of batter and not much fish. It's too bad, because it was an otherwise flavorful experience-certainly not worth the $7 paid. I'll give another shot and will try something else next time. Here piggy piggy!

Had a pulled beef bowl, great tender meat and delicious fresh toppings. Even though it was at the height of lunch hour and the place was packed, this efficient southern food slinging crew had no problem pushing out the food in no time. Pretty hard to mess this up. It is was great.

Coloradans are fortunate in the fact that we have plenty of good "fast" Mexican food places. The reasons Illegal Pete's stands out to me include they serve breakfast (I'm a huge fan of breakfast burritos), they serve alcohol and you can get potatoes in your burrito. Perhaps you're thinking, "Potatoes in your burrito? What's wrong with you?" If that is the case I'd reply, "Have you ever tried potatoes in your burrito? No? Then shut up until you do because it's damn good." The particular location of Illegal Pete's is fast, friendly and spacious as it should be to handle the Tech center throngs that crowd the place over lunch hour. And if the area employees are sneaking in a lunch time margarita, I'm certainly not telling.

  • Natasha E.

So good! Queso so much better than others I've had, service a bit slow as there was only two people behind the counter trying to take orders, make food and ring in orders for 10-15 of us in line. After half the people had been serviced a woman who appeared to be a manager reappeared behind all of us, getting change or who knows what. No matter, food was great, bartender was sweet and will be going back!

I hate to spoil the love fest for Illegal Pete's , but c'mon people! IT'S A CHIPOTLE. They thoughtfully placed a large jar and sign demanding tips near the cash register, so you can show your appreciation for paying too much for a mediocre meal.

  • Cassandra F.

Went here for lunch today. It was good and affordable. And by the line that built up while I was there, looks like it's pretty popular too. Seems about the same as Chipotle or Qdoba to me, except for the fact that this place has a small bar in the corner. The food was very similar though, and I enjoyed what I ordered (chicken soft tacos). The atmosphere kind of reminded me of a Wahoo's, at least decoration wise. Makes a quick, easy, and good lunch place in the DTC area.

  • Kevin K.

If you even sort of like Chipotle then you'll love Pete's. Its like Chipotle only served with higher quality meats and more options. Its also worth noting that the "salad" they serve is an actual salad and the tomato vinaigrette dressing is amazing.

Ordered from the Splick-it App on my phone. Went to go pick it up and the guy had no idea an order was even placed. He finally found it and said, "Oh, I thought it was for 7am." (pickup time was set for 7pm) How fucking stupid do you have to be to think a burrito order is for 7am when they're not even open that early? Then I got into the car & drove home without checking the order since I was already pissed for having to wait (big mistake). It was wrong and missing multiple ingredients. I called and the guy who made the order insisted he did it right. EXCUSE ME?! I'm looking at it. It's fucking wrong, asshole. His reply? "Oh. Well, I guess I forgot some stuff." *facepalm* I had to drive all the way back and have them fix it. Huge fucking waste of my time. Fuck this location. I'll stick to the one on Evans or 16th Street.

If I had to choose, I'd choose Illegal Pete's. While I haven't been to the other locations, the DTC shop certainly has it down. I'm not sure what they're doing different at Illegal Pete's, but it tops Chipotle and Qdoba any day of the week in my opinion. Their carnitas is pretty darn good; try the carnitas & potato burrito! It takes an extra minute to make but it's well worth it. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you also hung out for a beer or two. It seems they have decent drink specials as well!

There are lots of Mexican grills around town, I have always gravitated towards Chipotle (when I can't get to Bocaza), but having an Illegal Pete's nearby has led to a decrease in my Chipotle patronage. Illegal Pete's has a several items that raise the bar: 1) The option of potatoes instead of rice on the burrito. It takes a bit longer to make, but I much prefer spuds. 2) Once the ingredients are assembled on the tortilla, they are mixed up before it's rolled. I like the flavors blending together, and it also keeps the inside at a consistent temperature, not cold on one side. 3) It's more of a bar/resteraunt than a fast food joint, it's inviting and makes for a good neighborhood spot to get a beer and some good grub. 4) Overall, they have much more options available. The veggie burrito is a good flavorful dish, they have green chili, and several other options not available at the other places. 5) They actually roll the burritos correctly, so the end of your meal is not a giant wad of tortilla. Now on the downside: 1) More expensive, and charge extra for little things like fajita veggies. 2) If you order a potato burrito, they have a standard list of ingredients unless you specifically tell them what you do and don't want like with a rice one. This seems to be because the potato option is made on the back grill where the cook doesn't have customer contact, but I think it's just lazy. The last time I went there I was specific, and they simply made it their way instead, so I had to wait for it to be made a second time. If I could get Bocaza's inferno salsa on an Illegal Pete's burrito, I would consider it to be perfect.

The food here is fantastic and their green chili is superb. However, it comes with a price. The people that work at this location are so stoned that they haven't realized if they screw-up their order and forget bacon, they could just go to the store and buy some. "Uhhhh, sorry dude. We, like, don't have any bacon until the truck like, gets here or something." Love me a good high, but you've got to do better at work. The grocery store is about 3 blocks from this location. Stupid is as stupid does, I suppose.

I had a craving for Rumbi Bowl a few weeks ago, but didn't want to drive halfway to Kansas to visit their location at Southlands, so I headed down to the DTC. I was a little bit surprised to find them dark and locked up. Apparently, drawing from Chik-Fil-A's playbook, they are closed on Sunday. So what was I to do? Luckily, Illegal Pete's was right next door and open. It was about 11:45, and there was one other customer in the restaurant. So, no wait to get my food. In retrospect, a bit of a wait might have been a good thing. The menu here is frakking huge. if you're a regular, it's probably not an issue. But if it's your first time, make sure you take a few minutes and check out all the options. Don't get locked into the "rice beans meat salsa" pattern because that's all Chipotle says you're allowed to have. Stretch your wings, young burrito fan, and try some of the extras. One serious plus to Pete's over other burrito places, here they mix it up. So you don't ever get the bite that's just sour cream. As a matter of personal preference, I tend to go for the Baja style, so I'm more frequently found at Rubios than Pete's. But it's a good change of pace, and they do make a good burrito. I knocked off one star because the music was a little bit loud, and I'm a bit of a crotchety old man. next time, I'll get it to go and it'll be five stars.

  • Julie L.

Taking the silver for the freshest burrito, Illegal Pete's does a good job in delivering a sound solid burrito. With a larger expanded menu than it's similar counterpart Chipotle, I had the pork carnitas. Likewise, it included cilantro lime rice, black beans, quac, salsa, cheese and sour cream. The biggest difference is the meat and salsa. The carnitas were just a tad dry and the salsa didn't have much kick to it. The service that day was extremely slow. Only one guy putting all the food together and one cashier who did not help with the food line. Not sure if he wasn't trained or why he wasn't able to help but it took over 10 minutes before we sat down to eat.

Popped in here after usually hitting qdoba near by. Thought the chicken tacos I ordered had a much better flavor. Also had the queso which was decent enough. Will definitely go back.

  • Mark P.

I don't know why Illegal Pete's is "illegal." Maybe I do, it's because their chicken nachos is so good it should be illegal! I've tried the Qdoba version of the same dish and Pete's is miles better. I can't speak to how good the burritos are, or even the quesadillas cos every time I go in there I have to have the nachos. Ok...how about I stop gushing about nachos and talk about the rest of the place? Yeah? Alrighty then. Wow, where did Ace Ventura come from? Ok so this particular location is packed every lunchtime. If you come on a summer day anytime between 12:30 and 2 you can expect to see a really long line. Actually come on ANY day during the week at those times and you're gonna see a long line. What sets Pete's apart from Chipotle or Qdoba, (apart from the righteous nachos) is the full bar and happy hour. I don't know how much of a bonus that is since I don't drink. However, if that doesn't do it for you, check out the HUGE menu they have. You can put Chipotle's and Qdoba's menu together and still not end up with the variety you see at IP. It can be a tad daunting if you've never been before and have a long line behind you. Don't worry, it's all good...I hear :) If you're sick of Chipotle or 'doba you should give IP a try. You might never go back.

I am more of a Chipotle person myself. Illegal's isn't bad, but it's not spicy enough for my liking. I have tried their hottest-of-the-hot sauce and I was still dumping on the red pepper flakes. Not bad, but not up to snuff with good ol' Chipotle in my books.

While I do not care for their iPhone app for ordering I do love the company and their service. I placed my order (for 5) with the iPhone app and the store did not receive the order. When I arrived the manager immediately retook my order (did not wait in line) and prepared my order himself. He then gave me a gift card because of the delay in receiving my order. This is customer service at its best. The food was excellent and the service was as well. I will go back often.

Our first visit to Illegal Pete's today = AWESOME. One....like everyone else has mentioned...MIXING THE INGREDIENTS! Seriously. It makes a world of difference. My husband got the steak burrito, and I grabbed a veggie bowl...the veggies weren't quite finished cooking so they gave us complimentary chips and salsa while we waited. The customer service was superb. Both guys were super friendly, relaxed, and just gave the place a really chill feeling. I was pretty happy with the addition of the jalapenos and black olives as well. Not your typical fare at other burrito joints. Delightful. The potato green chile is yummy. The portions are ridiculously enormous! Super good deals all around...two burritos and two beers for $13.99, happy hour all day on the weekend, $1 tacos on weekdays...we'll definitely be back!

Illegal Pete's is all the wonderful aspects of Chipotle and Qudoba combined!! I have been die hard fan of Chipotle since they opened their first restaurant by DU. I have tried other Chipotle-like places but always left underwhelmed...NOT at Illegal Pete's. After moving away from Colorado for 5 yrs it was nice to re-try IPs since moving back. I was MORE than impressed!! Their nachos are the best as is their steak and potato burrito! The staff is super friendly and they have a fully stocked bar to boot. I have not only recommended but already took people to try it. I can't wait to try their breakfast menu! Keep up the good work IP and you have a customer for life!

I've been going to Illegal Pete's for a while, mostly for lunch. I like it so much I've made a point to get there for dinner a few times too. I love the fact this place has a full bar. The menu is similar to Qdoba or Chipotle, but also has some unique items. If you like fish tacos, you need to try the Big Fish. It is a delicious burrito, but takes a few extra minutes. It is worth the wait. The salsas are very flavorful, but the best thing Pete's does is actually mix all the ingredients up in your burrito. This way you don't get a bite of just sour cream or salsa, you actually get a nice blend of all the flavors. Also if you like green chile, theirs is pretty amazing.

  • Lauren D.

Ok everyone loves Illegal Pete's so I'll keep it brief. I like this place better than Qdoba or Chipotle. I like their food better, their staff is friendlier (and hipper...) and they have BREAKFAST BURRITOS starting at 7:30am!! (downer, no coffee) Chipotle doesn't have breakfast burritos but you can usually get some attitude thrown at you there ya know? I do believe Pete's has a full bar as well...only been there for lunch & breakfast though. Go there, you'll like it!

Absolutely love IP for their fantastic staff and great happy-hour. One thing that keeps IP head and shoulders above the rest are their numerous offerings and the signature mix of the ingredients. Try asking Esmeralda to mix your burrito at Chipotle. You just might get the Mexican back slap for acting up. The DTC Illegal Pete's has a great dining room and the patio is a great spot when it's nice out. Although the parking is not the best, patience will get you along just fine.

I like Illegal Pete's mainly because of their happy hour. You can get cheap drafts and inexpensive margaritas, plus they offer a (mostly) full bar. Best part is the free chips and salsa with warm fresh cooked chips and several salsas to choose from. I'm always intrigued by their breakfast burritos (which you can get all day long), and an ingredient you don't see offered at other burrito chains - potato. YUM!

Illegal Pete's is great for a lot of things, but my number one reason for being glad that they exist is their breakfast burritos...I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E! Sadly, I don't live in Denver anymore, but whenever I visit the Mile High City I'm sure to satisfy my Illegal Pete's addiction...many, many times. The only thing that would make this place better is if they had a store in San Fran!

Oh Illegal Pete's...where do I start? I had the biggest hankering for Mexican food for quite awhile now. I will make tacos at home every once in awhile, but that really does not count when it comes to sating my taco tooth (yeah, it IS like a sweet tooth...what?). I asked Kealoha to check Yelp for me to find out the best Mexican food options in areas we might want to venture too. He asked me a couple questions about sit-down restaurants versus fast casual also about authentic or not. After gathering up his needed info, he typed that into Yelp's algorithm and came across Illegal Pete's. It was highly rated which I really liked, but it was being compared to Chipotle which I did not really like. We went for lunch last Friday and let me tell you, my life will NEVER be the same. We walked in and instantly I forgot about my Chipotle worries. The restaurant was loud, crowded, and comfortable. I waited in line and soaked in the atmosphere...great Mexican art on the walls (reminded me of the Lotteria game artwork), the greatest wood grain I have ever seen is on this restaurant's trim, and all of the pretty waitresses are covered in tattoos. I stepped up and placed our order and found that the ordering style IS like Chipotle. I ordered 3 chicken hard shell tacos for myself, a pesto chicken burrito for Kealoha, and an order of basic nachos for us to share. The toppings I chose for my tacos included lettuce, cheese, sour cream, and mild salsa. As for the nachos, I was really in the mood for JUST cheese. The lady poured a liquid cheese on the chips...not the thick high viscosity cheese we are all used to, but a runny cheese that had red peppers in it. I paid for the items and took them to the table where Kealoha was waiting. Here is a simple pleasure in life that I really enjoy: restaurants that carry Diet Dr. Pepper. Illegal Pete's not only carries it, but it is available in their fountains. It saved me from having to drink any Pepsi products, and for that I thank them. And for you ladies that live the fabulous life, their cups are adorned with an almost Louis Vuitton pattern...so you don't have to check you lifestyle at the door. The tacos were delicious, the crunchy shell was not greasy at all...it was almost flaky. It held the ingredients without breaking, even with the wet salsa. The shells were filled to the brim and ingredients were falling out, but I just used my nacho chips to scoop it all up. Their chicken has a really good grilled taste, it looked like all white meat, and the salsa was so fresh and chunky. The nachos were spicy; that sauce has some kick to it...not if you have a mouth Kealoha, but my mouth is pathetic. There must have been something else in there as well, because I could not stop eating them!!! I cleaned the nacho plate as well as my taco plate and was very happy to wash it all down with the Diet Dr. Pepper. I left there with a full belly and the biggest smile on my face. It is nice to have delicious fixations like Illegal Pete's...I am already scheming to get Kealoha to take me back...maybe for Geeks Who Drink??

The food here is decent and affordable. Breakfast can be super cheap. The staff is good. My problem is that it smells like a sewer in here! I have been to several places in Greenwood VIllage that smell this way. How can one eat food when it smells like doo doo?

lets face it, illegal petes is just like chipotle or qdoba. i do like the way they mix the ingredients though, makes it somewhat unique. i dont have the palete for fancy salsa or other fancy ingredients, so i cant compare to the other places. BUT THIS PLACE IS GREAT, VERY COMPARIBLE TO THE OTHER BIG BURRITO PLACES. the location and atmosphere are good for a casual lunch.

Good place for a quick yummy lunch if you beat the I'm better than you high schoolers that have open lunch. The staff here is very friendly and the food is great. The hot salsa isn't that hot, but it has that hint of bitter that I like. I have tried most think on the menu and have no complaints.

I first heard about Pete's from my wife who is a huge fan of The Fish Burrito. While I have been known to eat my share of seafood burritos while in Mexico (read near the ocean where it's fresh and not deep-fried battered fish) I haven't been able to bring myself to try her favorite. However, it was love at first bite with the Green Chile burrito, with the pork green chile (not that there's anything wrong with vegetarian) and I haven't looked back since. My weekly cravings have resulted in Laura - the manager - beginning to create "the regular" before I reach the front of the line. On the people note, the staff are by no means your boring restaurant crew. Piercings and color adorn the majority, but they're an efficient and friendly bunch. Pete's also has a full bar and beers on tap, which I have yet to fully take advantage of because I'm a lunch regular and unfortunately we no longer live in the time of the 3-martini lunch... Oh, and make sure to check out the chalk board. If you can answer the day's trivia question, you'll score a free soda with your meal. Go! Eat!

Is just another Chipotle but with a different container for the burrito bowl. They serve large portions and the food is ok, nothing that deserves 5 stars.

  • Adam S.

My wife and I used to go here when the first open as we were lived across the street. Not bad, happy hour is cheap and it's a decent place for a burrito but they have several other options for food as well.

  • Josh P.

Colorado has produced some great burrito joints and Pete's is no exception. Although the guy who helped me at this particular location was somewhat smug, It wasn't enough to overcome the goodness of the steak and potato burrito. If you're in pre-resolution splurge mode (or after a few weeks when you've given up) it's totally worth the carbs.

I'm not from the area, but I've seen a few of these, so I'm assuming it's a pretty known chain in Denver? The food was pretty fresh, they make it right there in front of you - kinda like a subway or chipotle type of thing. They serve beer and margaritas, they even have a happy hour! We stumbled in on our vacay in Denver and they had a special for $1 tacos with an order of a beer! scooooore! so the hubs and i each got 3 tacos and a beer. tacos were good - i got 2 fish tacos which were yummy and weren't oily and just batter like some other places. also had a chicken taco which was seasoned well and not dry like some places. you get to choose what you want on it - piled mine with the tomato salsa & the green salsa! we also got a side of their pork green chile soup - it has a pretty good kick to it and filled with flavor and pretty hearty - if you don't like spicy food - this isn't for you, but we enjoyed it. they have sriracha which i thought was kind of an odd hot sauce to have at a taco joint! oh and if i recall correctly - they either have corn hard shells or only flour soft shells ... threw my hubby for a loop since he only likes corn tortillas - but he ate it anyways! staff was friendly, place was pretty crowded and who can resist beer, tacos & salsa?!?! If we were in town again, i wouldn't mind stopping by!

By far my favorite burrito locale. To grab a burrito anywhere else is just burrito blasphemy! There's nothing better than the Green Chile Burrito. The only critique I have is that the burritos are not always wrapped well, which is why I propose a burrito exchange program where IP (as I refer to it) employees go to chipotle/qdoba to learn to wrap, and the other burrito chains potentially learn what makes an amazing burrito.

The best Green Chile ever! I was on a business trip and decided to drive around a little and get somewhat lost and I stumbled upon this place. The menu is pretty extensive and I was not sure what to order, I decided on a burrito, smothered shredded beef. This was excellent and huge. My sadness was I had no more room to finish it all. And for those vegetarians that enjoy green chile they make a meatless version.

Love me some Illegal Pete's. Its one of the few places around here where you can get rolled tacos with guacamole, which I love and crave and miss since moving from the taco shop land of San Diego. Those little guys are pricey though ($6 for 4 or something like that!), but I'll usually pay it happily to get my fix. Their nachos are good too (yummy queso!) and actually I've never heard any of my dining companions ever complain about their food. I wish the location near Park Meadows hadn't closed because that's closer to me, but I'll still drive to DTC to visit this place.

So impressed with the breakfast burritos, and the bloody Mary may be the best I've ever had. The rest of the menu looks amazing, will definitely have to come back here!

Love this place and it's across the street. The food is good and fast. Sometimes the food can be little cold (chicken) at night because I think they don't have the traffic that they do during the day. Fun place to have a beer and they have a decent happy hour.

    (4)

  • Damion W.

  • Cathy S.

  • Trey F.

    (4)
  • Pat O.

  • Chris P.

  • Ryan S.

Had a pulled beef bowl, great tender meat and delicious fresh toppings. Even though it was at the height of lunch hour and the place was packed, this efficient southern food slinging crew had no problem pushing out the food in no time. Pretty hard to mess this up. It is was great.

  • Tiffany N.

We love illegal pete's green chilie. Great place to hang out. Between Bambu, the yogurt place, and illegal pete, this strip mall is becoming our back office.

  • Grant D.

  • James H.

YUM!

Go! Eat!

Is just another Chipotle but with a different container for the burrito bowl. They serve large portions and the food is ok, nothing that deserves 5 stars.

If you're in pre-resolution splurge mode (or after a few weeks when you've given up) it's totally worth the carbs.

lets face it, illegal petes is just like chipotle or qdoba. i do like the way they mix the ingredients though, makes it somewhat unique. i dont have the palete for fancy salsa or other fancy ingredients, so i cant compare to the other places. BUT THIS PLACE IS GREAT, VERY COMPARIBLE TO THE OTHER BIG BURRITO PLACES. the location and atmosphere are good for a casual lunch.

    (5)
  • La C.

  • Kirsten L.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
